Hi guys, in the market for a decent headset/headphone & mic setup and was hoping some kind people could share their knowledge and experience :D

What my preferences are so far:

  • Maximum comfort for long use
  • Over the ear for better comfort
  • Open back for better sound positioning
  • Detachable or fold away mic
  • Optional virtual surround sound
  • Under £200 if possible

My primary use will be for gaming and voice comms, but it would be nice if they could perform well for other media content.

Okay so what I have considered so far:

Let me know what you guys think! :D

EDIT: Added rough prices and Sennheiser HD598.

This may give you some considerations for the headphone and modmic option.

slightly old now so look for updated models etc but this is good reading Toss your old headset article

Also i would grab some braided cable sleeve and some heat-shrink. and sleeve your 2 cables together. Go careful with melting your heat-shrink as you have rubber wires to worry about but all should be fine if you don't overheat the heat-shrink. GUIDE

Alternatively some tiny cable ties will achieve the same thing but messier.

What sort of budget are you dealing with? I've currently got a fantastic pair of Sennheiser HD558s that I've had for a couple of years now and they're still holding up great, and using a Blue Yeti as a mic; not a fan of the "Gaming Headset".

Also I'd check up on the modmic because I got one (before the Blue Yeti) without realising they apparently really don't cooperate with Realtek sound cards, so be warned about that. If you want I can send you mine cheap as I won't be using it, had it out of the case for a couple of hours trying to sort it out and gave up and it's been in a drawer ever since, left it to long to send back to Amazon!

well  Sennheiser is by far the best option anyone could ever go with in terms of headphones!

but ive jumped around to many different headphones in the past 5 years or so

im currently enjoying and liking the asus cererbus ROG Gaming headset. granted its not my cup of tea for wearing in bed while listening to a movie or ASMR but hey its pretty good for the price!

Logitech G430.  Great price and everything you need, its wired though..... that's the only bad side but I prefer that myself anyway.  Comfortable and good sound.  I like mine :-)

Has to be really under £200. Have added the HD598 to the list after looking into the range you suggested :)

Is your unused modmic with the inline mute? I'm guessing its the same version as the one linked above?

Ok so this is interesting. The Sennheiser GAME ONE are available from the amazon.com for $160 which is about £120 (£20 cheaper). My mum is visiting from the USA in a couple of weeks so I could ask her to purchase to save a bit of cash. Actually this also applies to the HD598.

what did you go for in the end?

I got a FiiO - E10K DAC (there still is a deal on amazon) and now was looking for a pair of headphones. The general ideea seems to be that if you want high quality sound for gaming you shouldn't get a "gaming headset" or virtual surround.

The exception might be a few pairs sennheir offers.

I'm still researching but I might get the  Audio-Technica ATH-M50X

there is a really good deal for  AKG K702 Open-Back https://www.amazon.c...-2&keywords=akg

tempting but they are open-back so the sound leak it might annoy my wife (and I'll bet annoyed if I can hear the TV)

Edit: I have no patience so I ordered a pair of M50X, I might get them tomorrow :D

I have used the headphones yesterday for a few hours and I must say I wish I would have bought them sooner.
Listening to music and even gaming is a whole new experience. I now hear sounds I never heard before.
I tested rust on a battlefield server but since the server was laggy the sounds were f-ed, good old shitty buggy laggy rust...

It depends on the sound source of course - on Overwatch I was dizzy while playing it, I don't look at it as bad thing. It's just the flood of information, sound in this case, my brain will need some time to re-adjust.
All in one, I'm happy I bought them.

Hey mate! Sorry just seen this, glad you got a pair you're happy with. I wish I bought a better headset sooner too, my old cheap Turtle beach one's are so uncomfortable compared to my new ones.

Ummm I kind of got greedy :D I got the Sennheiser GAME ONE's to use for gaming/voice comms and the AKG K7XX for everything when no mic is needed.

Well damn, they do look nice. I need a new pair... but I usually go under £30 cheap. However... if the pound is going to keep tumbling I should probably do so sooner rather than later. I've just always found most headphones uncomfortable as they push my glasses into my face... So I keep rebuying this one shitty pair every couple of years that hurts a lot less.
