This is completly making my head mashed potato. For a start, how did it get from fate to time travel? Why would you want to go back in time? It was crap, they just belted the shit out of each other with sticks while been chased by angry lions.

Hmmm, well, that's a big question. Yes we are in charge of our own fate and we get to make choices that determine our fate but that does not mean that we can change or manipulate our fate. What I'm trying to say is I agree with Dark's first post. Kind of.
Meaning that any choice we make good or bad is the best possible choice we can make at that time.
The question that you should be asking is.... should we be allowed to be in charge of our own fate. I mean it's hardly sensible!
