I'm hoping someone might be able to assist me here; I updated my graphics drivers last night (I'm using a Radeon 4850) and I noticed that the option to install the HD Audio drivers was there (I think it's been there for a while) but it got me thinking.

Would a DVI to HDMI cable from my PC into my moniter/tv carry an audio signal?

I'm looking to streamline my speakers and basically have one set for my 360/ps3/PC, if this is the case and I hung a pair of speakers off my moniter using this cable, would I see any performence hit on my graphics card since it's kicking out another process??

Thanks for reading :)

All HDMI cables should transmit audio as well as video, and I have to admit it is nice to be able to converge cables down to one. (just recently got a new tv system at my house and loved the simplicity of it, even if they are monstrously expensive)

As for loss of performance, technically yes but realistically no. Your gfx card is already fairly involved in the sound process anyway, (since it must call and co-ordinate events that generate sounds etc to ensure they match up correctly with events on screen) you might notice a slight loss of frames, something in the 5-6 fps area, but nothing so bad that's it's not worth doing. The payoff for this of course is HD sound.

And the fewer cables as you said - I might try it out tonight, I'm sure I have a converter from DVI to HDMI somewhere in my room lol.
