Would you want to live forever?

I personally, would.

Not sure I'd want to live forever, as I would get bored I think. I'd like to live for maybe a few thousand years though.

I suppose I would like to live forever if there was some way of switching myself off and hibernating whenever I wanted.

I would want to live forever, but still have the choice to end my life if I had good reason for doing so. A far fetched example would be that I was still alive when the sun engulfed the Earth. If I couldn't die then I'd end up being in a great deal of pain because of, well, being inside the sun. So yes, I'd like to be immortal, but not invincible.

To be immortal is to not be subject to death, and has been sought since medicine was invented.

I would only like to live forever if I could choose one more person to experience immortality with me, but then again if you are going to be immortal does that mean you could survive in space? Because even the Earth will die sometime..

I'm undecided really. It's something everybody ponders at some stage I think. It seems like an attractive prospect at face value, but the more I think about it, the less attractive it becomes to me. It'll never become a reality so I don't really give it much more thought than what I've just written..

Don't be so sure! The human brain is just electrical signals connected in a network of organic matter. I think eventually it will be possible to transplant the electric signals into a network of synthetic matter, like a computer. This would allow "life" to continue indefinitely. Of course it's no small feat considering the enormous complexity of the human brain. There may also be ways of preserving biological life indefinitely through research into genetics and the causes of ageing and the decay of bodily functions.

Hmmmm living forever sounds good, but what if you got stuck in a cupboard underground and couldn't get out!? That would be pants.

No, but I'd like to be younger for longer. If you lived forver, would you get older more slowly or not at all? And how hard would you have to work to survive?

Post from 2007..

Interesting topic. I would love to be a ghost, be able to travel the world or the universe just observing all the wonders. But it would be silly to want to live forever, eventually the universe will be very large and contain very little.

So this thread lives again. Possibly forever?

I only want to live forever if my friends and loved ones could do so as well and if you could stop ageing at like 50 or so.

If I didn't keep ageing and could stay at a reasonably healthy state, then totally, I would love to see where the human race gets to in the future, it fascinates me

I would like to live forever, with the option of hibernating whenever I want and for as long as I want. And it would be possibly one day to live forever by transmitting our thoughts to computers. Sheldon certainly thinks so, so why shouldn't we? :D

I'd kill myself out of depression of seeing all those around me die.
