I used to be be quite anti-monarchy but I couldn't care less anymore. If we did end up getting rid we'd have people like Boris Johnston and Simon Cowell running for President. Better the devil you know.

Wait what? You know people can't run for the monarchy right?

Now I'm just playing devil's advocate here but I think it's worth mentioning a few benefits of the monarch
  • They provide an element of continuity for a democratic system by acting as an advisory role to the Prime Minister. Otherwise you end up with two (or more) opposing parties coming in and out of power and constantly pulling in different directions
  • The alternative to a monarchy - a republic - can be equally costly. The security and staff required for a President is expensive.
  • The monarchy brings in £200m a year through people visiting sites associated with royalty. The cost of keeping the monarchy is estimated at £190m a year when including security and all hidden costs.

I'm with Dark on this one. I'm also against all the inherited titles, functions and advantages over the ordinary citizens.

I've always found all this stuff King, Lord, Baron etc - high class - completely bollocks

Why would someone have huge advantages and rule over people just because he/she cam out of the right whole...???

In a modern and free society leaders should be elected not imposed.

I'm a foreigner here so maybe I'm not the best to speak about this, as you the British people might have feelings towards monarchy as it's part of your history.

Me, personally, from a practical and economical point of view I see no point in monarchy and the blood sucking so called High Class .

We don't need a president... Couldn't we just have the current parliamentary system but without the monarchy?

Pay me £200 million ill happily advise the current PM and anyone can come visit my house(s) from the outside any time.

Honestly we put up with so much shit in this country and the monarchy is just one piece of shit in a ever rotting pie.

Only thing i seen in the last decade that captured my attention, was the decision of pippa middleton to wear THAT dress without and nickers.

I'm not an expert on politics but does any other country have a system where the Prime Minister has absolute power with no President? Could that work?

It seems to me like we're doing pretty much that at the moment seeing as the queen has no real power...

For the record I'm not actually pro monarchy but I think it's worth having a real good think about what the alternative would be. Would the country really be better without the monarchy? Are France or the USA really better off as a result of not having a monarchy? Is their standard of living higher? Would our standard of living be higher without the royals?

You've got to think long term. I'm not sure introducing commercialism to heritage sites will work in the long run.

Half of my family are from Goa in India. The state is very rich in minerals so everyone was very keen to let big companies mine the area (and they've made a lot of money in the process) but they've actually shot themselves in the foot in the long run as they've completely destroyed the beauty of the state and tourism has taken a huge hit.

Those are all constitutional monarchies though. So the monarch is there in place of a president. What I meant was; can a country be run with just a prime minister as head of state with no president or monarch?

Most of those have monarchies though, whether they hold any power or not is debateable.
