Seems to have a lot of positives on top of having free servers, what do you guys think?

Myself and a group of friends moved from Skype to Discord a few months ago, I was reluctant to make the switch, having used Skype with my group for about 8 years. Overall I'm impressed with how well it works for a group of gaming friends.

No longer needing to make and host a call is great. Discord allows you to simply drop in and out of VOIP, keeping you in the text chat at all times. You can drag and drop images into the Discord chat, and rather than them needing to be downloaded by the other members, they're uploaded and hosted... somewhere. That means you can drop in a screenshot and post the link elsewhere, like a built in imgur.com. It allows you to be a part of several groups at the same time, easily switching between chats with your friends and... your other friends!

I like Discord, I think it works well for our small group. I don't think it would suit a larger group as a primary voice communication solution though. The voice quality in general isn't as good and suffers fairly frequent further drops in quality. The service as a whole often goes down a few times a week for a few minutes at a time.

That being said, I think it still might be a good idea to have a server/group to use as something similar to our current shoutbox. There's a phone app which seems to work OK and could certainly help us keep in touch when we're not at our PCs.

Yea that's why I was thinking about Slack, which Discord seems to be heavily inspired by, which is just a chat program. That allows integration with external authentication so I'd be able to let people use their site logins.

Discord doesn't seem as fleshed out as something like TeamSpeak for voice chat yet - e.g. the permissions seem very simplified. Might be something to look at in a year or two, but for now I think we should stick with TeamSpeak.

I have tried it with pugs from various games. Im not a fan tbh. I had to google how to close it. seems to hide all options and customization to, so it keeps loading up from start. Works ok saying that but i like ts and all the room customization so yeh its ok wouldnt swap tho

never used the program personally but as someone that's tried multiple VOIP's programs i can definitely say that Teamspeak will forever always be the best in terms of permission setup and vast customization for tags etc!

allow total control over what people can and cannot do on your server!

only bad side is that server prices are pretty bad right now. but if you're just looking at a small server for a group of friends, then its worth still investing into!

I'm currently using Discord for Wildstar,

It does the job, however I don't have much experience in the layout and setup similar to how you currently have TS setup.

It's worth a shoot or at least messing around with it, since it's over all design is simple, that and that it's free helps.

Emphatic No from me.

Teamspeak suits our needs + is reliable with nice clear sound.

I agree that Discords isn't really suited to large scale voice comms, however it is a great tool for small groups and PUGS, the integrated text chat is pretty nifty particularly with the phone app.

Hey erm I would just like to chime in on this.

Discord benefits don't lie only in its voice. The benefit is mostly in its community building ability. And a platform for group chat that goes beyond forums or messaging in teams peak steam etc.

I have been using it for a while now to run a team fortress mix group. It is easy to maintain user permissions and I found it really good for organising games. A simple announcement to @everyone or @here will allow you to grab people for a mix or scrim.

The chat isn't bad but not yet as powerful as teamspeak or mumble. But will get the job done for casual mixes. We haven't had any issues with tf2 6v6.

My last point would be... https://discord.gg/0WrILkb5M806Sxm3 Look how much of the overwatch community is using it. It would be easy to attract players to our community if we had our own.

That channel is just reddit. There is also try hard ow and comp ow channels.

Now, i must keep my initial stance, but also admit that Sketch made valid and pertinent points in his post.

It'd be nice to have a global chat, but I'd really want it to have external authentication. I don't want to have to manage two lists of members -- there are 1,542 accounts on the DkR site (there used to be over 3k before I did a major pruning).

The fact that the Overwatch community use it isn't really a pro. We can still get the benefits of that without using it for internal comms (just like using IRC in days gone by), and I don't think use of a particular comms is something many people are bothered about when looking for a community to join.

If they add support for external authentication then I'll be up for using it for sure. That's the only serious issue I have with it. Until then it's not like we have any noticeable issues communication-wise, save for people not checking the website as often as they should.

Discord is seeing a lot of use in open communities like reddits, twitch broadcasters etc.

https://discordapp.com/features

Feature wise as far as voice coms go it doesnt really seem to be any better than TS.

It does have community features though so it might be worth checking out.

That said, i m more of a if-it-aint-broke-don't-fix-it guy and Teamspeak has worked perfectly for me since RW died.

While i kinda like the chat functionality of the program more than TS3, voice quality wise though i find it subpar and would not suggest the switch over, atleast not yet.
